National Type 1 Diabetes Expert Dr. Kimber Simmons to Join Shore Physicians Group for Free Diabetes Education Event November 12

Type 1 diabetes isn’t just a childhood disease. It can develop at any age, and some adults initially diagnosed with type 2 diabetes may actually have type 1, the autoimmune form of diabetes, that requires a different approach to care.

To help community members better understand pre-diabetes, type 1 and type 2 diabetes along with the latest advances in diabetes screening, Shore Physicians Group and Diabetes Training Camp are teaming up to host a free educational breakfast on Thursday, November 12, from 10 a.m. to noon at Linwood Country Club.

The event, “Understand Your Prediabetes or Diabetes Diagnosis: Could It Be Type 1?”, will feature nationally recognized type 1 diabetes expert Kimber Simmons, MD, a board-certified pediatric endocrinologist, assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Colorado and researcher at the renowned Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes in Aurora, Colorado.

Dr. Simmons is at the forefront of research into the early detection and prevention of type 1 diabetes. As part of the Barbara Davis Center’s Prevention Team, she leads clinical trials focused on preventing the disease and helping individuals preserve their body’s ability to produce insulin. She also serves on the Board of Directors of Diabetes Training Camp, where she shares her expertise with teens and adults living with diabetes.

Living with type 1 diabetes herself for more than 30 years, Dr. Simmons brings a unique combination of medical expertise, groundbreaking research and personal experience to her work. A former collegiate athlete and passionate advocate for people living with diabetes, she is frequently invited to educate healthcare professionals nationally and internationally.

Her visit offers South Jersey residents a special opportunity to learn directly from a leading researcher working to change how type 1 diabetes is detected, understood and treated.

Joining Dr. Simmons will be two local diabetes experts:

  • Matthew Corcoran, MD, endocrinologist with Shore Physicians Group and founder and president of Diabetes Training Camp, a nationally recognized program that helps people living with diabetes improve their health and fitness through education, exercise and expert support.
  • Tiffany Rios, CDCES, RDN, registered dietitian nutritionist and certified diabetes care and education specialist with Shore Physicians Group, who helps patients manage diabetes through nutrition, education and personalized support.

The event is especially relevant for individuals who have been diagnosed with prediabetes or diabetes, have a family history of type 1 diabetes, or live with thyroid disease or another autoimmune condition.

Attendees will learn about the differences between types of diabetes, the importance of an accurate diagnosis, who may benefit from screening and how advances in early detection are creating new opportunities to identify type 1 diabetes before symptoms appear.

The event is free and open to the community, and includes a complimentary breakfast. Advance registration is requested via email at wellness@shoremedicalcenter.org or by calling 609-365-5257.
