Dr. Carl Gjertson is a robotic surgeon and endourologist, specializing in the medical and surgical treatment of prostate cancer, kidney cancer, and complex kidney stones.
He grew up in Western Massachusetts and attended Yale University, majoring in molecular biophysics and biochemistry. After college he worked four years as a research technician at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston and then at the University of Basel Medical School in Switzerland.
Dr. Gjertson received his MD from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. His surgical training included urology residency at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York, and a fellowship in laparoscopic and robotic surgery at Indiana University. While at Columbia University, Dr. Gjertson was honored with several awards including the Allen Whipple prize in Surgery, Virginia Apgar award in Anesthesia, John Lattimer prize in Urology, Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism and Excellence in Teaching award, Peter Puchner urology resident teaching award, and Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society.
Prior to arriving in southern New Jersey, Dr. Gjertson was faculty at the University of Connecticut Health Center for 17 years. During his time at UConn he was honored twice with the Myron Walzak urology teaching award, and was twelve times named a “top doctor” in Connecticut Magazine and Hartford Magazine. Dr. Gjertson has a particular interest in prostate cancer treatment and community outreach, and was recognized in 2015 with the Curtis D. Robinson Center for Health Equity Award of Excellence.Dr. Gjertson is committed to providing the highest quality medical and surgical care, and ensuring patients understand their diagnosis and treatment options. In September 2024 he joined the Shore Physicians Group to provide robotic, open, and endoscopic surgery options for urology patients at Shore Medical Center in Somers Point. He was named a “top doctor” in Philadelphia Magazine in April 2025.
